I’m absolutely fascinated by birds, especially songbirds. My paintings below are of hummingbirds, butterflies, bluebirds, blue jay, cardinals, and Baltimore Orioles. I enjoy painting male and female bird pairs and showing the differences in their coloring. My bird pairs are also symbolical of life renewing itself, and togetherness.
Bluebirds have a special place in my heart as they are illusive creatures, and take special attention in order to attract them to your yard. They have to compete with non-native, aggressive birds for nesting spaces, so we help them out by setting up nesting boxes, and providing them with their favorite food – meal worms. We also monitor their nestbox to make sure everything is going all right in there. We’ve been hosting bluebirds for several years now, and never get over the thrill of seeing them come back to our property in the spring.
Hummingbirds – What can I say about this wonderful little bird? Just fascinating to watch, and amazing to learn about the distance they travel each year. We see them every year in spring and summer; we have a feeder just outside the kitchen window. In August, they spend a lot of time feeding on our blooming butterfly bush, which is also outside out kitchen window. They will rest in the lilac bush, and fly over to our flower garden to feed. We also see them zoom off across the yard to wherever they go. Sometimes we’ll see a pair of them flying around.
